The route through Chile, Bolivia and Peru combines the Atacama Desert and Salar de Uyuni with Andean cities and Inca monuments. The itinerary includes La Paz, Lake Titicaca, Cusco and Machu Picchu. Domestic flights and meals are provided as specified in the itinerary. FULL PARTNER ITINERARY AND CONDITIONS Tour itinerary Day 1 Journey to Santiago de Chile Meet at the Rainbow check-in desk 2 hours before the aircraft’s departure, in the departure hall of F. Chopin Airport in Warsaw. Please check the current flight schedule at: r.pl/rozklady. Flight to Santiago de Chile via one of the European airports. Day 2 Santiago de Chile: a city of contrasts Arrival in Santiago de Chile. Chile’s capital is a city full of contrasts—skyscrapers intermingle with colonial monuments, while the entire city is surrounded by scenic hills. Santiago is considered one of the most important economic and cultural centers in all of South America. From La Moneda Presidential Palace in the government district, we will walk to the main square, passing the Palace of Justice and the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art. In the heart of Santiago, on Plaza de Armas, we will see the beautiful cathedral and historic seats of the most important institutions dating back to colonial times. We will also see the monument to the city’s founder, Pedro de Valdivia, and a monument dedicated to Chile’s indigenous people, the valiant Mapuche. We will then head to the foot of San Cristóbal Hill to experience the artistic atmosphere of Barrio Bellavista—a bohemian district favored by students and decorated with colorful murals—neighboring elegant Lastarria, famous for its street market of artistic souvenirs and a café full of magic. Finally, we will climb one of Santiago’s park hills to enjoy a panoramic view of the Chilean capital, with the Sanhattan district rising above it and the impressive Costanera tower. Transfer to the hotel, check-in, dinner and overnight stay. (Route approx. 50 km.) Day 3 Rainbow Valley and the mysteries of the Atacama Desert After an early breakfast (a breakfast box may be provided), transfer to the airport and flight to Calama, from where we will set off toward San Pedro de Atacama. The town, situated at approximately 2,440 m above sea level, is a green oasis in the middle of the Atacama Desert. The Atacama is considered the driest area in the world; some weather stations have never recorded rainfall! The desert’s harsh landscape posed a considerable challenge to competitors in the Dakar Rally, whose route once passed through the Atacama. Before arriving in San Pedro, we will walk through Valle del Arcoíris—Rainbow Valley—so named because of the unusual colors of the hills found there. A palette ranging from reds and purples to white creates a fairy-tale landscape. Transfer to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay. (Route approx. 170 km.) Day 4 El Tatio geysers and Moon Valley: discovering the wonders of the Atacama Before dawn (breakfast box for the road), we will travel north to one of the Atacama Desert’s greatest attractions, the El Tatio geysers. These are among the world’s highest-altitude geysers; they are located at approximately 4,300 m above sea level and look their best in the early morning. The geysers resemble miniature volcanoes which, instead of lava, spurt hot water, while the mineral formations left after the boiling water evaporates are exceptionally interesting. We will then head toward Cordillera de la Sal, where magnificent natural salt formations of extraordinary shapes can be admired. Next, transfer to Moon Valley, whose name comes from its truly cosmic landscape: dried-up lakes and earth cracked from lack of rain resemble the Moon. Return to the charming town of San Pedro. Dinner and overnight stay. Day 5 Bolivia: along the trail of colorful lagoons and flamingos After an early breakfast (a breakfast box may be provided for the road), travel toward the Bolivian border and transfer to jeeps (NOTE: the highest point reached on this day is situated at 4,850 m above sea level). Along the route we will see numerous high-altitude lakes called lagunas in Spanish, each captivating with different colors; among others, we will stop at the green Laguna Verde and see Laguna Blanca. After lunch, we will admire another one—Laguna Colorada. It is one of the most beautiful places in all Bolivia. The pigmentation of its waters depends on the presence of various species of algae. This shallow salt lake owes its popularity to its characteristic, intense red color. Numerous contrasting white stretches of borax can also be observed on its surface. This entire extraordinary phenomenon is set within a picturesque, pristine mountain landscape. Ruta de las Lagunas is also famous for the great numbers of flamingos gathering around its colorful waters. Laguna Colorada is inhabited mainly by pink short-billed flamingos. We will then see Árbol de Piedra, an unusual wind-carved rock formation resembling a tree approximately 7 m high. We will reach Uyuni late in the evening. Hotel check-in and overnight stay. (Route approx. 450 km.) Day 6 Railway heritage and the Uyuni salt flat: an expedition through Bolivia’s treasures After breakfast, we will visit the Train Cemetery, a unique place remaining from the railway boom of the late 19th century. It was connected with the rich mineral deposits discovered at that time and their transport from mines to ports on the Pacific coast. Today, nearly one hundred locomotives and railway cars abandoned many years ago can be found here. We will then travel to the world’s largest salt flat—Salar de Uyuni. This exceptionally flat (the difference in elevation is less than 41 cm), enormous salt desert covering approximately 10,000 km² guarantees amazing views. Saline rivers flow beneath a layer of salt several meters thick. We will have lunch on the salt flat and see a hotel built almost entirely from salt blocks, the area’s principal raw material, as well as the Dakar monument. An optional excursion is available to the Salt Sculpture Park with the Great Labyrinth and to watch a unique sunset over Salar de Uyuni (approx. USD 45). Return to the hotel and overnight stay in Uyuni. (Route approx. 240 km.) [Façade of the Basilica of St. Francis in Sucre with red entrance doors.] Day 7 La Paz: between heaven and earth in Bolivia’s capital After breakfast, flight and sightseeing in La Paz, Bolivia’s largest metropolis and one of the world’s highest cities (3,200–4,050 m above sea level). It was selected in a prestigious Seven Wonders of the World competition in the cities category. We will see, among other sights, the Church of St. Francis, the cathedral, the Government Palace and Congress. A visit to the Witches’ Market, where all manner of talismans and amulets can be purchased, will give us a thrill. After lunch, walk to the hotel, check-in and overnight stay. (Route approx. 40 km.) In the evening, an optional peña—a night of colorful and unique Bolivian folklore with a buffet dinner—is available (approx. USD 60). Day 8 Culture and traditions of Lake Titicaca After breakfast, we will travel toward the Bolivian–Peruvian border and then to Puno along a scenic road beside Titicaca—the highest navigable lake on Earth. Upon arrival, we offer a cruise to the floating Uros Islands (additional charge approx. USD 70). The islands, built from totora reeds, are inhabited by the Aymara people; we will learn about their homes, culture and customs. This is a one-of-a-kind and unforgettable encounter with the colorful, authentic, ancient culture of the people of Lake Titicaca. Transfer to the hotel, check-in, dinner and overnight stay. (Route approx. 270 km.) Day 9 Cuzco: capital of the Inca Empire and treasures of the Andes After breakfast, coach journey to Cuzco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. Along the way, we will stop at La Raya Pass, which forms the boundary between the Puno and Cusco regions, and in the pueblo of Checacupe on the Pitumarca River. This charming town, lost in time, is a guardian of Andean traditions. It is famous for its bridges: a colonial stone bridge and a hanging Inca bridge. This 15th-century structure, woven from ichu grass and built on the orders of the Inca ruler Inca Wiracocha, formed part of the extensive Qhapaq Ñan Inca road system. Beside the square stands one of the most beautiful 18th-century adobe churches, with original mestizo-colonial architecture and paintings of the Cuzco school. Arrival in Cusco, dinner, check-in and overnight stay. (Route approx. 400 km.) Day 10 The Inca heritage of Cuzco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas After breakfast, departure from central Cuzco for a walk through Sacsayhuamán, a complex of impressive temples often described as an “Inca fortress,” where Peru’s most famous Inti Raymi festival is still held today. In the afternoon, an optional excursion to Pisac in the Sacred Valley of the Incas is available at an additional charge (approx. USD 125, admission tickets included). This exceptional place in Inca history is characterized by extraordinarily fertile soil and magnificent landscapes. We will see alpacas, llamas and guanacos up close and tour the remains of the Inca city of Pisaq, a testament to the magnificent Inca culture and excellent preparation for exploring Machu Picchu. We will also visit the famous souvenir market in colonial Pisac, where we can try delicious corn served with cheese. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay. Day 11 Magical Machu Picchu: a wonder of the world in the heart of the Andes Early in the morning (breakfast box for the road), a two-hour transfer to the railway station in Ollantaytambo, where we will begin our excursion to Machu Picchu (the train journey takes approx. 1.5 hours), one of the SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD (on the UNESCO list since 1983). Revealed to the world in 1911, the lost city of the Incas consists of astonishing stone structures spread across a hundred terraces. The scale and beauty of this place convey the extraordinary richness of Inca culture. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay. (Route approx. 230 km.) Day 12 Cuzco: hidden treasures of the Incas Breakfast and a walking tour of Cuzco’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The itinerary includes Plaza de Armas, the cathedral with a picture gallery housing masterpieces of the Cuzco school of painting, and the former Temple of the Sun—Coricancha. The adventurous may try guinea pig (included). After lunch, transfer to the airport and flight to Lima. Transfer to the hotel and overnight stay. (Route approx. 30 km.) Day 13 The gems of colonial Lima After breakfast, check-out from the hotel, followed by sightseeing in the colonial district: Plaza Mayor with the impressive palace housing the seat of government, the cathedral (mausoleum of the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro), and the Monastery of St. Francis. Stop at the historic Desamparados railway station, the starting point of a route designed in the 19th century by engineer Ernest Malinowski. Then visit the Larco Herrera Museum, housed in a historic building and presenting a detailed overview of Peru’s pre-Columbian history as well as remarkable collections of gold objects, ceramics and textiles. Transfer to the airport. Return flight to Poland via one of the European airports (the exact meeting time will be provided locally by the Rainbow tour leader). Day 14 Return to Warsaw Arrival at F. Chopin Airport in Warsaw. Notes on the itinerary The tour leader does not guide visitors around Machu Picchu—the assigned route is toured under the care of a local English-speaking guide, in groups of several to a dozen or more people. The order in which itinerary points are carried out may change or be reversed. On domestic flights, the allowance is 20 kg of checked baggage and 5 kg of hand baggage with maximum dimensions of 25 x 35 x 45 cm, in the form of a bag or backpack. This New Year’s Eve trip to Brazil combines a stay in Rio de Janeiro with a visit to Iguazú Falls. The itinerary includes a New Year’s Eve celebration aboard a boat and watching the fireworks near Copacabana. Domestic flights, accommodation, breakfasts and tour-leader assistance are included. FULL PARTNER ITINERARY AND CONDITIONS Tour itinerary Day 1 The adventure begins: departure for Rio de Janeiro Meet at Warsaw F. Chopin Airport at the Rainbow check-in desk 2 hours before departure. Scheduled flight to Rio de Janeiro, with a connection at one European airport. Please check current schedules at r.pl/rozklady. Arrival in Rio de Janeiro, passport control, transfer to the hotel and overnight stay. Day 2 Relaxing on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro Breakfast at the hotel. Information meeting with the tour leader, followed by time to rest and sunbathe on one of Rio de Janeiro’s magnificent beaches—we particularly recommend iconic Copacabana or elegant Ipanema. Holiday life unfolds along both beaches, with luxury hotels, a variety of restaurants and ordinary vendors offering simple food or souvenirs. Brazilians love Rio, spending time on the beach and dancing in the street—especially during the New Year’s Eve and Carnival season. Rio de Janeiro itself is one of the world’s most popular tourist cities, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Picturesquely situated on the Atlantic Ocean and Guanabara Bay, it is watched over by one of Brazil’s most recognizable symbols: the statue of Christ the Redeemer looking down from Corcovado. Overnight at the hotel. [Panorama of Rio de Janeiro with the statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado.] Day 3 Rio de Janeiro: at the heart of the Brazilian spirit After breakfast, we begin sightseeing in Rio de Janeiro, called “a cidade maravilhosa”—the marvelous city—by Brazilians, a city bustling around the clock. We take the railway to the top of Corcovado, home to the famous 38-metre statue of Christ the Redeemer, recognized in 2007 as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. We also pass the famous “temple” of football, Maracanã Stadium, regarded as the largest venue of its kind in the world. In a country where football is almost a religion, many even call it the Temple of the Gods. We then visit the Sambadrome, where processions of colorful samba dancers display their skills during the world’s most famous Carnival each year. During concerts and Carnival, the Sambadrome is closed and can only be seen from the bus windows. Next we travel to the “red beach,” Praia Vermelha, where a cable car takes us to the top of Pão de Açúcar—Sugarloaf Mountain, 396 metres above sea level. Return to the hotel for the night. In the evening, we recommend visiting one of the live-music clubs in the Lapa district to understand the famous saying, “São Paulo works, Rio parties.” Day 4 New Year’s Eve: a sparkling celebration aboard a boat Breakfast at the hotel. Free time to prepare for the celebration. Our New Year’s Eve adventure begins in the heart of Guanabara Bay, where music aboard the boat gets a real party under way. An open bar and a wide choice of local snacks are available on board. The atmosphere becomes even hotter when professional samba dancers appear in dazzling feathered costumes, spreading the energy for which Rio de Janeiro is famous. This is not an ordinary party but a taste of Carnival, where drum rhythms mingle with the sound of the waves and every guest becomes part of the joyful, white-clad community celebrating life. The climax comes just before midnight, when our schooner takes up a strategic position off Copacabana, offering a view dreamed of by millions worldwide. From this unobstructed perspective, you will see a gigantic pyrotechnic display lighting the entire horizon and reflected in the ocean. Raising a New Year’s toast aboard the gently rocking boat, surrounded by fireworks and the sounds of samba, is a memory that will remain with you for years and make you feel that you are welcoming the New Year exactly where the heart of the world beats. Return to the hotel for the night. Day 5 Free day to rest Breakfast at the hotel. After the sparkling celebration, it is time for well-earned rest and relaxation on the beach. Overnight at the hotel. Day 6 Rio de Janeiro: the artists’ district and botanical garden After breakfast, we travel by jeep to Santa Teresa, an artists’ district where time seems to have stopped. Panoramic views of the city and Guanabara Bay are sure to delight everyone. We admire the extraordinary Selarón Steps, made entirely from ceramic tiles from around the world; observant visitors will find Polish elements among them. We then continue to Jardim Botânico, the botanical garden founded in 1808 on the orders of King John VI on the site of a former gunpowder factory. It is famous for an avenue lined with 134 royal palms. Its 140 hectares contain approximately 6,000 subtropical and tropical plant species, including an especially impressive 900 palm species. Since 1992, the garden has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve. We can also see the sumaúma, the Amazon’s largest tree, and pau-brasil, from which Brazil derives its name. Return to the hotel and overnight. Day 7 Iguazú Falls: the majesty of nature Breakfast. Transfer to the airport and flight to Foz do Iguaçu, possibly with a connection, followed by sightseeing on the Brazilian side of the world-famous Iguazú Falls, whose name means “great water” in the Guaraní language. We walk a trail offering views of magnificent cascades falling from different heights, but our principal destination is the largest of the Iguazú waterfalls, Garganta del Diablo—the Devil’s Throat—over 70 metres high. The roar of masses of water falling from the basalt ledge and the all-pervading mist create an absolutely unforgettable experience. At the end, a lift takes us to the upper level of the falls for another opportunity to take exceptional photographs. Transfer to the hotel, check-in and overnight. In the evening, guests may optionally attend a Latino show, South America’s largest dance performance, with dinner, at an additional cost of approximately USD 90 per person. Day 8 Discovering the Argentine side of Iguazú Falls After breakfast, sightseeing in Iguazú National Park on the Argentine side. Along marked trails, we discover the secrets of the tropical rainforest and enjoy beautiful views of the waterfalls. We follow an approximately 2-km boardwalk to a viewing terrace, where we can once again admire the beauty of Garganta del Diablo. The view is breathtaking. Two optional excursions are offered.
